Surgical Missions: Care, Relieve, Save
Bringing specialist care to forgotten populations
In regions such as the Sankuru in the Democratic Republic of Congo, access to healthcare remains a major challenge. Medical infrastructure is limited, hospitals are far away, and people’s financial means are very precarious. In response to this health emergency, MEDAF organises mobile medical and surgical missions, a vital initiative that provides free, specialist care to the most vulnerable people.
These missions make it possible to:
Offer general, gynaecological and surgical consultations.
Provide diagnostic and follow-up ultrasound scans.
Provide the laboratory tests essential for accurate diagnoses.
Free care, but costly to organise
Mobile surgical mission, 5 weeks, in the Sankuru
Although the care is free for patients, organising a surgical mission requires:
- State-of-the-art medical equipment (ultrasound scanners, surgical instruments, consumables).
- Specialist teams (surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses).
- Suitable vehicles to reach isolated areas.
- Heavy logistics (transport, fuel, accommodation, food for staff, maintenance, etc.).
A concrete, measurable impact
Mobile surgical mission, 5 weeks, in the Sankuru
During the mission carried out in Sankuru province from 9 January to 20 February 2025:
6,250 medical consultations were carried out.
2,479 ultrasound scans were performed.
271 surgical operations saved lives.
We need your support
These missions are made possible by the generosity of partners and donors. To continue and extend this work, MEDAF needs sustainable financial support. Your donation can:
- Fund a surgical operation that will save a life.
- Allow a pregnant woman to have a free ultrasound scan.
- Provide an early diagnosis for a sick child.
