Training nurses and midwives in rural areas
ISTSAN & MEDAF: a collaboration since 2020
ISTSAN: a school serving local development
The Institut Supérieur Technique du Sankuru (ISTSAN), located in Lodja in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is committed to providing quality education, even in the most remote and hard-to-reach regions.
Thanks to a robust computer suite and innovative technology solutions, ISTSAN opens the doors to online learning for its students, giving them access to teachers from around the world.
Thanks to technology, it is possible to teach remotely and change the lives of students living in geographically and economically isolated areas.

Training a healthcare worker transforms a life, a family, a community. It is an investment in the future
A difficult context
The DRC has the 3rd highest maternal mortality rate in the world (473 deaths per 100,000 births). One of the main causes is the lack of skilled healthcare workers, especially in rural areas. There are 1.7 nurses & midwives per 10,000 inhabitants (WHO, 2022), of whom only 7.2% are qualified midwives in rural areas.
Epidemics, a lack of medicines and access to water are also enormous challenges. Training professionals is a concrete way to enable them to face this difficult context, and perhaps they will become agents of change?
The challenges to overcome
Too few competent trainers in this isolated location
Shortage of teaching materials
Inadequate basic education system
