HIGHER TECHNICAL INSTITUTE OF SANKURU (ISTSAN)
About ISTSAN
The Institut Supérieur Technique du Sankuru (ISTSAN) embodies a commitment to educating tomorrow’s healthcare workers and to development in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Founded on the conviction that education is the key to empowering individuals and to community progress, ISTSAN is committed to providing quality education even in the most remote and hard-to-reach regions.
ISTSAN is located in the remote province of Sankuru, in the very heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the town of Lodja. The institute was founded with the bold vision of democratising education and creating learning opportunities for everyone, wherever they are. ISTSAN currently has four functional buildings, including the administrative building, the main lecture theatre DoDA Bourgeois, the Christ Roi auditorium and premises for visitors. These facilities can accommodate around 450 students.

Invest
To date, 150 to 200 students are regularly enrolled. With 74.6% of the population living below the poverty line (2023 World Bank estimate), ISTSAN is working to develop its infrastructure and equipment, but resources are lacking. These efforts can be supported mainly by sponsoring students, but also by contributing to the construction of a residence, or by a donation that will fund the purchase of school supplies or IT equipment.

Distance teaching and international collaboration
One of ISTSAN’s distinguishing features is its commitment to distance teaching and to collaboration with NGOs and contributors from various countries. Through strong partnerships with humanitarian organisations such as MEDAF Suisse and La Gerbe in France, ISTSAN offers its students privileged access to quality teaching delivered by international experts.
Currently, around three classes a week are taught from Europe, mainly for the Health stream. These classes cover subjects such as anatomy, pathophysiology, nursing, obstetric care, nutrition and laboratory techniques, as well as French lessons, among others.
